Constructed in 1988-89 as a venue for the 1989 Olympic Festival, the Aquatic Facility has gained national recognition as a center for swimming and diving competitions. Over 34,000 cubic yards of earth were removed to establish a sub-grade at deck level to correspond with existing building’s finish floor elevation. An additional 12,000 cubic yards of structural excavation was performed to create the lap pool and diving well. Because the pools are constructed over a natural spring, both pools are built on a pier and grade beam foundation to counteract the upward lift of the water table below. Each pool is constructed of poured-in-place concrete with interior finishes of plaster and ceramic tile for lane striping. A high degree of accuracy was required for all concrete work in order for each swimming lane and diving platform to meet Olympic Standards.
After the Olympic Festival, it was decided that an indoor pool would better suit the needs of the college. Once again, Lippert Bros., Inc. returned to the pool and enclosed it with a steel superstructure and added classroom facilities with upper level grandstand seating above.
